TikTok Shop
TikTok Shop vs eBay: operational differences
If you already run an eBay operation, TikTok Shop is not a copy-paste. The economics are similar enough to be tempting and the operations are different enough to catch you out.
The dispatch clock works differently
eBay gives you a handling time in days and expects you to work out the deadline. TikTok gives you the deadline directly, as a timestamp on the order. The TikTok version is easier to work with and less forgiving, because there is no ambiguity about when you crossed it.
Buyers arrive with different expectations
An eBay buyer went looking for the item. They searched, compared, and chose. A TikTok buyer was watching a video. The purchase is more impulsive, which has two consequences: cancellation rates run higher in the first hours, and patience with a slow parcel runs shorter.
That second point is the one that costs money. The same fifteen-day delivery that an eBay buyer accepts because the listing said so will generate messages on TikTok by day six.
Cancellation windows
TikTok gives buyers a short window to cancel outright without seller involvement. If you buy from your supplier the instant the order lands, you will sometimes be holding stock for an order that no longer exists.
On eBay you can largely buy on receipt. On TikTok there is an argument for a short deliberate delay on higher-value items - not long enough to threaten the dispatch deadline, just long enough to let the impulse cancellations clear.
Tracking validation is stricter
eBay will accept a tracking number and a carrier and largely take your word for it, with consequences later if the number never scans. TikTok validates earlier and more visibly. The upside is that you find out you got the carrier wrong sooner.
Returns land in different places
eBay returns mostly route through a formal returns flow with an address you control. TikTok leans harder on buyer-initiated flows with platform arbitration, and the timelines are shorter.
What transfers and what does not
- Transfers: supplier relationships, product research, your margin model, your customer service tone
- Transfers with edits: your tracking workflow, your spreadsheet layout, your dispatch routine
- Does not transfer: your assumptions about buyer patience, your handling-time habits, your cancellation exposure
Run both and the shared part is the buying. Everything downstream of the purchase needs its own set of rules.
