AliExpress Choice orders and what changes for dropshippers
AliExpress Choice is a consumer-facing proposition - faster, more reliable, consolidated. For a dropshipper sourcing from it, several things behave differently and not all of them are improvements.
Consolidated shipping cuts both ways
Choice consolidates items into combined shipments, which is what makes delivery faster and cheaper. It also means an item you ordered for a specific customer may be travelling with other items, under tracking that describes the consolidated parcel.
If you are dropshipping direct to a customer, consolidation is not what you want - you want one parcel, one customer, one tracking number.
Tracking behaviour differs
Choice shipments often produce tracking that is more reliable in transit and less obviously mapped to the specific item you bought. For your purposes the number needs to resolve to the customer is parcel, and that relationship can be less direct than with a standard order.
Verify with a test order before committing a product line to Choice sourcing. The first scan check applies here as everywhere.
Returns go to a different place
Choice return handling is oriented around the consumer proposition, with its own addresses and processes. If your workflow assumes you can arrange a supplier-side resolution directly, that assumption may not hold.
Pricing and availability move
Choice pricing is frequently promotional, and promotional pricing is not a stable basis for a margin calculation. An item that worked at the promotional price stops working when it reverts, and nothing warns you.
If you source from Choice, re-check your buy prices more often than you would otherwise. Monthly at minimum on anything selling steadily.
Where it genuinely helps
For products where speed is the constraint and the customer experience of the outer packaging does not matter, Choice can materially shorten delivery times, which shortens the window in which buyers get anxious and open cases.
That is a real benefit and it is worth testing on your slowest-delivering line.
Test before you commit
- Order one to yourself and look at what arrives and how it is branded
- Check whether the tracking number resolves for a single parcel
- Record the actual dispatch-to-first-scan time
- Confirm the price you modelled is the price you paid
