TikTok Shop

How TikTok Shop returns differ from eBay and Amazon

Every marketplace has returns. The differences are in who decides, how fast, and what evidence counts - and those differences are big enough that habits from one platform actively hurt you on another.

The platform decides more often

On eBay, a lot of return handling is between you and the buyer, with the platform stepping in when it escalates. TikTok arbitrates earlier and more readily. Practically, that means your first response is often to the platform rather than the customer, and it needs to contain evidence rather than reassurance.

The windows are shorter

Timelines on TikTok are compressed relative to what eBay and Amazon sellers are used to. A response you would have got to tomorrow on eBay can be a default finding against you on TikTok.

This is the single most common way established sellers lose money when they add TikTok: not doing anything wrong, just answering at the pace their other channels taught them.

Evidence that works

Tracking that shows a delivery scan is the strongest thing you have, and it only helps if the number was valid in the first place - which loops back to uploading the right carrier.

  • Carrier tracking showing delivery, ideally with a scan location
  • Timestamps showing you dispatched inside the SLA
  • Your message history with the buyer, kept on-platform
  • Photographs where the dispute is about condition

Anything that happened off-platform - a WhatsApp conversation, an email to the supplier - is close to worthless in arbitration even when it is true.

The dropshipper-specific problem

You do not have the item, so you cannot inspect it and you usually cannot receive it back economically. A return that costs more to ship back than the item is worth is a refund-and-write-off, and pretending otherwise wastes days.

Decide that threshold in advance. Below it, refund immediately and keep the relationship. Above it, work the return properly. Making that call fresh every time is how sellers end up arguing over eight pounds.

Refunds you were not told about

The variant that catches people out is the refund that happens on the supplier side without changing anything on the marketplace side. The parcel is marked delivered, the buyer is happy, and your supplier has quietly refunded you - or has not, when you assumed they had.

That reconciliation is nobody else is job. If you are not checking supplier-side refunds against marketplace-side outcomes, there is money going missing in both directions.
