TikTok Shop payout timing and why your profit column lies

A profit column built from the order payload is a forecast, not an accounting record. Sellers treat it as the latter and make decisions on a number that has not happened yet.

Three things sit between the sale and the money

First, fees. Platform commission comes off, and it is not always the flat percentage you assumed - category and promotion participation both move it.

Second, promotional funding. If an item sold under a discount, some of that may be platform-funded and some seller-funded, and the split is not visible on the order line.

Third, the hold. Funds are not released immediately, and the release schedule is tied to delivery confirmation rather than dispatch. A slow parcel is slow money.

The cash-flow shape this creates

You pay the supplier on day zero. The buyer pays TikTok on day zero. The parcel arrives around day twelve. Your money lands some days after that.

So you are funding roughly two to three weeks of purchasing out of your own pocket, continuously. Growth makes that worse, not better: doubling your order volume doubles the float you need before any of the new revenue arrives.

This is the mechanism behind a very common failure - a seller whose sales are climbing and who runs out of money anyway.

Reconciling properly

The only honest profit number comes from the settlement report, matched back to your supplier costs per order. That is tedious and it is also the difference between knowing your margin and guessing it.

  • Keep the supplier cost in the same row as the order id
  • Import settlement data rather than retyping it
  • Match on order id, and expect some to arrive across two settlement periods
  • Treat any order you cannot match as a question, not a rounding error

What to do with the provisional number

Keep it - it is useful for spotting obvious disasters early. Just label it as provisional, and never make a stocking or pricing decision on it without checking the settled figure for a sample of the same product.

The gap between the two is usually consistent per product. Once you know that gap, the provisional number becomes genuinely useful, because you know what to discount it by.
