Amazon Buy Shipping: the protection and the trade-off

Amazon offers sellers a deal: buy the shipping through us and we will protect you on the metrics that shipping affects. It is a good deal, and most dropshippers cannot take it.

What the protection covers

When you buy shipping through Amazon and dispatch on time, you get protection against claims where the carrier was at fault, and the tracking is automatically valid because Amazon generated it.

That removes two of the three things that damage FBM sellers: invalid tracking, and being held responsible for a carrier is failure. The remaining risk - the item itself being wrong - is one you can control.

Why it does not apply to dropshipping

Buy Shipping assumes the parcel starts with you. You buy a label, you attach it, you hand it over. A dropshipped parcel starts at a supplier warehouse that will not print your label and often is not in your country.

There is no version of this that works at arm is length, which is why dropshippers are permanently on the unprotected side of the line.

What you are carrying instead

  • Full exposure on Valid Tracking Rate, with numbers you did not generate
  • No carrier-fault protection when a parcel is lost in transit
  • Evidence burden on you in every claim
  • Dispatch timing dependent on a third party

Stated plainly like that, it is a meaningful amount of risk, and it is the reason dropshipping on Amazon is operationally harder than on marketplaces with lighter performance regimes.

Partial mitigations

Some sellers route higher-value orders through a domestic prep service - the supplier ships in bulk to the service, the service ships individually with your labels. That converts those orders to genuine self-ship, which makes Buy Shipping possible.

It costs money and adds a day, and for high-value or high-risk items it can be cheaper than the claims it prevents. For low-value items it will never pay for itself.

The honest calculation

Work out what a lost parcel actually costs you: the refund, the metric impact, the time. Compare that against the per-unit cost of routing through a prep service. There will be a value above which the protection is worth buying and below which it is not.

Most sellers never do this calculation and route everything the same way, which means they are over-paying on cheap items or under-protected on expensive ones, and usually both.

What to do in the meantime

If you are fully on supplier tracking, the compensating controls are the ones covered throughout this series: verify first scans, know your suppliers dispatch times, set handling time honestly, and answer buyers fast. None of them are as good as the protection. Together they are most of the way there.
