Uploading tracking to TikTok Shop on time

Uploading tracking to TikTok Shop looks like a one-line API call. It mostly is. The part that goes wrong is everything around the number itself.

The carrier is not optional

TikTok asks for a carrier alongside the tracking number, and it uses that pairing to validate. Give it a number that does not match the format the named carrier uses and the upload can be accepted while the tracking never resolves - which leaves you looking dispatched with a parcel the buyer cannot follow.

This bites hardest with AliExpress consolidators. The number you get back is often from a line-haul partner rather than the last-mile carrier the buyer will eventually deal with, and picking the wrong one from the dropdown is easy.

Upload once, and upload late rather than wrong

There is a strong temptation to upload the first reference the supplier gives you. Resist it if that reference is an internal order number rather than a carrier tracking number. They look similar and behave completely differently.

A tracking number scans. An internal reference does not. If the number has not produced a carrier scan within a couple of days, it was probably never a tracking number.

Partial shipments

If an order has multiple lines and they ship separately, TikTok expects the tracking to be attached per line rather than to the order as a whole. Attaching one number to everything makes the second parcel invisible, and the buyer chases the item that has no tracking - which is the one that actually needed it.

What to do when tracking changes

Sometimes a supplier reissues a number, or the parcel moves to a different last-mile carrier and gets a new reference. Whether you can update depends on how far the order has progressed; once delivery is recorded, the window closes.

The practical rule: correct it the moment you learn about it, and keep the old number in your own records. If a buyer opens a case about a parcel that has two references in its history, you will need both.

A sequence that holds up

  1. Buy from the supplier and record the supplier order id in the same row as the TikTok order
  2. Wait for a reference that looks like a carrier tracking number, not an internal one
  3. Confirm the carrier from the number format, not from what the supplier called it
  4. Upload against the correct order line
  5. Watch for the first scan - no scan in 48 hours means the number is wrong

The fifth step is the one almost nobody does, and it is the one that catches the mistakes the first four made.
